The detachable battery is chargeable with any regular 220V outlet… Sounds too good to be true, yet we made it happen!

The Ujet story has started back in 2013, with a group of like-minded scientists and businessmen nurturing the concept of creating a brand-new disruptive technology platform in an established automotive world. The main idea was to challenge the norm with a high level of freedom and the most pioneering and progressive technologies. Being a spin-off of OCSiAl, world’s leading manufacturer of graphene nanotubes, we had a great competitive advantage in a form of high-tech equipment, labs, and foremost scientists.

Numerous concepts and prototypes were made and tested to develop the most advanced electric scooter on the market. It has been a dream from the very beginning to create a technological platform and as a result a unique product. We wanted the product to serve as a validation of all these intrinsic capabilities, like an alloy comprising of deep understanding of science, mechanical classical engineering, electrical engineering, and IoT.
The initial brief for Ujet electric scooter development and the overall idea was based on the fact that back then, in 2013, we expected the future of mobility to be drastically different from the state it was in. We knew that the future would be electric, filled with new a type of light vehicles, vehicles you can customize to your needs at ease. It was also clear that in the future we will see a huge number of new user scenarios. Of course, we did not know the exact scenarios, however, we expected Ujet to become one of them.

Instead of copying the path of our competitors, we decided to go off beaten track and take the risk of creating a brand-new vehicle with around 94% unique components. We strongly believe that only re-development and re-invention of ordinary things with new ideas can create absolutely new values and therefore provide freedom. In Ujet we see freedom in new user scenarios, seamless integration to the lifestyle and new trends.

We had several ideas for 3-wheelers, 4-wheelers, even flying objects and Ujet became a compromise on resources, possibilities, and time-to-market. We have decided to go for this class, but not the kick-scooters, the later were not yet properly regulated and thus appeared to us as potentially dangerous for the consumer. And thus, we have decided to go for the electric 2-wheeler class, as on the one hand it is related to big automotive, with all the development procedures being the same, and on the other hand 2-wheeler development is not that heavy from the point of view of resources and initial investment.

And the overall journey has started from user scenarios, and we decided that our potential vehicle must be foldable, the battery must be detachable, and usable for other applications and for other products. This is one of the reasons why the battery is serving as a seat and is rollable.
The main challenge for us in early stages was in fighting the stereotypes and established ways of thinking on the automotive market. One can re-invent the wheel, electronic architecture, discover new materials only if they possess a brave attitude. This is the reason why on the primary stage when we were looking for partners to develop the actual engineering and aesthetics design, a lot of big names have told us that we were a bunch of crazy dreamers and that they were not ready and willing to work with us.

Finally, we did find the partners with the shared attitude and subsequently established our own engineering team with a real pioneering and brave way of thinking. There were a lot of risks, and we have spent a lot of resources, but as a result, as we have developed much more than one 2-wheeler. We have developed around 40-50 design concepts of the vehicle before we got to the Ujet Founders Series.

Our main technical challenge was to reduce weight – the weight of the motor, increase the power of the battery, the efficiency of the energy break recuperation, the steering column was meant to be ultra-light, while keeping the asymmetric shape, using the carbon fiber. And as a result, we have developed the Ujet Founders series.
We wanted to have an absolutely disruptive design. It was obvious to us that in order to fit all the requirements we had for the vehicle it must be truly original. Disruptive design in Ujet case is a functional feature, beyond pure aesthetics. For example, one may wonder why is the frame asymmetrical? The Ujet electric scooter is a foldable 2-wheeler, and if we went for a classic scooter design it would have been very difficult to fold it into a compact object. It gives the user an opportunity to have the standard vehicle that can be used on the city roads, at the same time effortlessly put into the trunk of the car or conveniently stored in the flat.
The projects through its development have changed several times as some ideas were not possible, and in some areas, we had to make compromises. For example, in the initial Ujet, we had pedals. We killed the idea because pedals are drastically affecting the overall ergonomics of the vehicle. As with pedals, the user is not using rotation but is pushing the pedals with the weight of their body. Moreover, pedals must be always placed in a very specific place in relation to the seat. And because of that one cannot apply the magic triangle of the ergonomics - feet, seat (center of gravity) and hands position.

In mechanical engineering, we had to have an unprecedented approach as well. We have combined the seat, battery and the frame, and were viewing it as a singular development, whereas usually, engineers create the frame separately, then adding battery with battery houses, fixing system and the seat as a separate element. Thus, combining these 3 elements we created something new, provided great weight reduction, improved ergonomics and re-invented not only the product itself but foremost the approach for the development.

The other question we asked ourselves was what the functionality of the smartphone would be. We had a vision of a smartphone being the key element. Ujet Founders Series has the infotainment system for doubling your smartphone on board.

Ujet Founders Series is a summary of the most advanced technologies in a lot of areas, and the main uniqueness of Ujet is in combining them. We have fitted a very small object with all these technologies, including high-tech IoT, materials science, electronics, hardware, and real mechanical engineering. As an example, Ujet is equipped with the over-the-air update system, which required us to build a complicated infrastructure and a lot of very specific parts of the software.

One of the unique and key features of Ujet is its in-wheel brushless motor, lightest in its class with a maximum power of 3.6 kW (4.9 hp equivalent). To get there we have developed 5 different motors with different partners, some of them were indeed great inventions, yet only possible to be produced on a small scale due to the complexity of engineering. Through enormous amount of trials and testing, we reached the point of the mass-produced, lightweight and extremely efficient motor.
When working on the design of the electric scooter back in 2016, the Ujet team turned to the organic shapes in nature, paired with contemporary architecture for inspiration. The asymmetrical and sculptural frame makes the scooter look bold but also easy to handle, and the ability to quickly and easily fold and store the scooter adds to its convenience.

With the design, finalization has entered the new era for Ujet, the official factory opening in Foetz, Luxembourg. As of 2017 Ujet has been manufacturing it’ prototypes and serial products in this state-of-the-art facility.

With the start of 2019 Ujet has kept on concurring the mobility world with product launches across the European Union and Russia. Ujet’s unprecedented design and product quality have been acknowledged by the Red Dot Design Award, iF Gold Design as well as Deutscher Digital Award for the Ujet App.
